The origin of Father’s day can be traced to the year 1909 when a woman called Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd (the mother of Father’s Day) decided to designate a day for her dad William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and a single dad who raised his six children on his farm in Washington after his wife died giving birth.
According to US history, there are known several attempts to have a national holiday for male parents but the first Father’s Day service was held on the 5th of July, 1908 in honor of 365 men who died during the Fairmont Coal Company mines accident in Monongah. It wasn’t an annual celebration then.
Mrs. Sonora Smart is credited for her successful efforts early in the 20th century to raise support for her idea to have a national celebration in the USA for dads just as the Mother’s Day celebration. In the state of Washington, the first-ever Father’s day celebration took place on June 19, 1910.
